Photography Courses on the Isle of Mull

Described by Dugald MacPhail, Mull’s famous bard as the most beautiful of the Hebridean isles in his song ‘An’t Eileann Mhuileach… of Isles the fairest’ the Isle of Mull is certainly an outstanding area of natural beauty.

Although the weather can be very changeable, indeed there are locals who say that it is possible to experience all four seasons in one day, as a photographer this makes for great landscape photography opportunities, so join us on this remarkable Scottish island on one of our Isle of Mull photography courses.

Our landscape photography course covers everything from a wide sweeping vista to the smaller details like moss covered rocks, natural patterns and more. Quality of light is a major component of a good photo, it provides both mood and drama whilst the direction, colour and intensity of light has an enormous influence on your chosen subject and can really make or break a picture. However, there is rarely such a thing as 'bad light' we just need to maximise the opportunities that are presented to us.

The quality and clarity of light on the Isle of Mull can be breathtaking with the best light often to be had in the shorter days between October and March when the skies can be dramatic and the hills capped with snow.

Early spring and into the longer, warmer days of May and June herald the opportunity to photograph many of the wonderful wildflowers, including many orchids that the island has to offer.

Preparation for any photography trip is crucial - especially if covering ground within a remote area so each of our on-location photo courses will require a degree of fitness as they may involve some gentle walking of approx 20 to 30 minutes. However, this is not too strenuous and should be within most people’s capabilities.

Images are made by you from many elements including your inner vision and how you interpret your vision and aspirations. If any of these elements are missing, then the image will fail. Therefore, simplicity is often the key to a good strong image. Do not be afraid to experiment and push the boundaries for only then will you realise your full potential.

Finally, the Isle of Mull is a magical and challenging place for photographers and well worth a visit at any time of the year. Contact Phil to arrange your photography course and we promise you will go away inspired and like many others will return to do more.
